The MUSTANG© shell scanner was developed to provide continuous
scanning capability while providing Ultrasonic Thickness measurements and
velocity. Measurements are typically recorded every 1/4" along the length
of the Dryer Shell while maintaining a scan speed of 4 to 6 inches per
second. A system encoder is used to ensure the exact location of the recorded
measurements at all times and is displayed in feet and inches.
"Real Time" viewing of the B-Scan image with simultaneous plotting of the thickness
scan on the PC screen affords the technician the opportunity to immediately
note any discrepancies or anomalies. These areas can be verified immediately
simply by backing the crawler up and re-scanning the area without terminating the scan.
Data is stored directly on the PC, so memory is virtually unlimited and
transfer of data is not required.
The system uses a two channel multiplexer
which is a reliable solid state unit that requires no modification of the
Ultrasonic instrument and uses a four point calibration. This calibration
compensates for all delays in the wedge which is automated in our software.
Previously acquired data can be simultaneously displayed with current data.
The MUSTANG© reporting software prints the line scan for the
Ultrasonic thickness and Velocity on the same page for each scan taken. All
thickness values at or below the assigned minimum value are printed in red
with the thinnest recorded measurement for the scan noted in the margin.
MUSTANG© has the ability to be configured to perform conventional ultrasonic
thickness inspections on storage tanks, pressure vessels, railcars, and other
types of ferromagnetic components.
