Corrosive or abrasive environments often dictate the need for composite materials with a layer of Stainless Steel (SS)
cladding over the carbon steel substrate. Magnetic Lift-Off (MLO) is the preferred method of measuring the thickness
of the remaining SS layer giving you the information you need to plan your maintenance activities. MLO is basically
the measurement of the reduction of magnetic attraction as the distance between the probe and the ferromagnetic
substrate is varied. Calibration is accomplished by using non-magnetic shims of known thickness to establish the
thickness range to be measured.
